The Guest of the Season

We welcome this being into our homes, clearing a sacred corner so all who enter might share in its quiet grace. We adorn its branches and make it feel special, but this year, the spirit of the season feels different.

I have brought home a living tree—housed in a humble pod, its roots still drinking, its heart still beating. When the festivities fade, it will not be discarded; instead, it will move to the patio to rejoin the sun, the rain, and the company of other green things.

There is a nobility in its presence. It feels less like a decoration and more like a temporary family member. As I hung each ornament, I found my hands moving with a new kind of tenderness, a soft caution born from the knowledge that I was touching a living thing.

From the Journal

Inspired by my new companion, I opened my journal to this question:

“If you could hang more than just ornaments this year, what would you grace your tree with?”

As I looked at the branches, four words took root in my mind: Light, Love, Faith, Spirit.

My heart is full of the universe today. This week has been a tapestry of celestial wonders: the New Moon on the 19th offered us a clean slate, a quiet moment of darkness before the rebirth of light. Today, December 20th, the comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) makes its closest approach to Earth, a fleeting visitor from the deep sky.

Tomorrow, the 21st, we mark the Winter Solstice—the longest night of the year. But in that darkness lies a beautiful promise: from here on, the days will begin to stretch and brighten. There is so much hope to be found in this return of the sun, and I am weaving that light directly into my journal artwork. To think of that celestial traveler passing by while my small tree breathes beside me makes the world feel vast and intimate all at once. All things of the universe inspire me so deeply!

1. For the Cupcake Top (the Frosting): I used a clean, ironed coffee filter. The texture and subtle shade are perfect for a light, airy frosting.

2. For the Cupcake Bottom (the Wrapper): I found some fun, colorful cardstock, like the kind used for the backing of stickers, which is a perfect weight for the wrapper.

3. Layering and Contrast: I used my painted papers for the main elements:

   • A light, subtly painted sheet for the overall background.

   • A darker, more textured painted piece for the bottom wrapper accents. Mixing non-plain colors adds much more interest!

4. Creating a Soft Focus: To make the background look even softer, I added vellum paper (tracing paper works too!) on top of the painted background. This gives a lovely, light, and blurry feel, just like a soft-focus photo.

I like to think of these cards as miniature paintings. By applying simple art principles—like using light and dark contrast, varying textures, and layering—you can transform basic paper crafts into elegant, painterly works of art.

Cardmaking using stickers! ✨

I love, adore stickers! I collect them, and I admit my stash is a little big right now—I just love seeing them in their beautiful, complete packages! But for your eyes only, I'm willing to open a few and finally use them!

The easiest way to start is to choose a theme. Once I have my stickers, I let the colors guide me as I search for coordinating papers. You have a few great options for the background:

• Contrasting Colors: Use opposite colors to make the sticker pop dramatically.

• Same Palette: Use similar shades for a harmonious, blended look.

• Neutral Backgrounds: Stick to white, cream, or light gray paper; this will make your sticker stand out the most!

Find shapes in your cardstock or die-cuts that will complement your chosen sticker. Before you glue anything down, take time to play around with the arrangement. Once you're happy, glue everything down, and then see if you can add a few more small accents like gems, enamel dots, or a simple stamped sentiment to complete your design!

A Simple Recipe for Personalized Joy: The Watercolor Kitty Card

To show you how simple and effective personalized cardmaking can be, I want to share the process for my latest design. I recently found some beautiful kitty stickers and I simply couldn't resist them! They became the perfect centerpiece for a quick, yet charming, collection of cards.

Here is how I created them:

1. The Centerpiece: I placed each kitty sticker on a piece of watercolor paper. Using a pencil, I lightly traced a circle around the kitty to define the central element.

2. Adding Depth with Watercolor: I then used soft watercolors to add delicate floral accents and washes around the penciled circle, giving the kitties a beautiful, blooming frame.

3. The Organic Cut: Once the watercolor was dry, I cut out the entire circle. I started the cut with a craft knife and then finished the edge by gently tearing the paper with my fingers. This technique gives the piece a wonderful, organic, and soft look that contrasts beautifully with the clean lines of the card base.

4. Assembly: I pasted the finished watercolor kitty circle onto a coordinating piece of background paper, ensuring the colors complemented the kitty and the flowers.

5. Finishing Touch (The Vintage Look): To complete the card, I gently rubbed or distressed the corners of both the watercolor paper and the card paper with ink. This simple touch instantly gives the card a somewhat vintage, aged, and lovingly worn feel—simple, easy, and fun!

This approach proves that professional-looking results don't require complex machinery or techniques, just a little imagination and a few charming elements. Whether you are using elegant stamps, patterned papers, or adorable stickers, remember that the most important dimension of any card is the love you put into it.
